Fabulous Friendship Bracelet

A color for every friend

Making embroidery thread friendship bracelets was a rite of passage for most kids – not me, however. I never learned how to make those neat little knots into patterns. I watched as other girls knotted and tied and created bracelet after bracelet. I tried to copy what they did (and they tried patiently to teach me), but alas – I was hopeless. After realizing that I just didn’t have what it took, I turned my bracelet making efforts to something I could do: beading!

In honor of Friendship Month (and for those of us who simply can’t get embroidery thread to do anything other than knot up in a very unbecoming way), it’s time to get out the beads and get crafty!

When making a beaded friendship bracelet, it’s important to consider color. Some believe that the colors of beads have special significance. Here are some common color meanings:

Black: mystery, power, confidence

Blue: peace, hope, reliability

Brown: stability, comfort, loyalty

Green: calm, natural, compassionate

Orange: happiness, joy, excitement

Pink: affection, enthusiasm, youth

Purple: strength, sophistication, luxury

Red: love, action, adventure

White: kindness, truth, clarity

Yellow: friendliness, optimism, creativity

If you’re not sure what your friend’s favorite colors are, use the color meanings as guides. For a strong, calm friend, use green and purple. For a loving and peaceful friend, try mixing blue and red.

If you’re looking for some fun beaded designs, check out some absolutely wonderful examples at Pinterest (one of Auntie Jess’ favorite places to go for crafty inspiration).

And for those of you who really want to learn to make bracelets the embroidery-thread way? Here are some stellar instructions!

Making friendship bracelets is a great way to show your buddies how much you care! Gather up your favorite kids, a whole bunch of beads and some thread – and get beading!

  3. My girls do both the beads and the embroidery, but I used to love doing the bracelets when I was a young girl myself.. Thanks for the tips on the color meanings. I’m actually going to make all my girls one. Just to remind them they always have me there for them.
