Make a Beaded Pen

A Craft for Kids 6 and Up

Decorate a pen with beads.

Schoolwork is more fun when you’re studying in style! Decorate a pen or pencil using craft wire and beads. Select beads to match your school colors, spell your name or use your favorite colors,  and you can even add a charm.

You’ll Need:

Decorate a pen with beads.

  • Pen or Pencil
  • Craft wire  – 16 gauge for wrapping
  • Beads (4mm – 6 mm)
    Alphabet beads (optional)
  • Wire Cutters (adults only please)
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Glue Dots or a glue gun (adult)

Ask an adult to cut a 4-6 inch piece of wire.
Curl one end of the wire with the pliers to make a stopper.
String beads onto he wire in a pattern, or spell your name.

With an adults help, clip off any extra wire or make a curly wire design  but make sure you bend over the end so the beads stay in place.

Wrap the wire into a tight spiral around the pen or pencil.

If it slips a bit, add a small glue dot to keep it in place.
An adult can also use a glue gun but that makes it hard to switch to another pencil or pen later.

This is great! A friend of mine gifted me with a bunch of her old beads and a beading box, and I had no idea what to do with all of it. These are nice for kids, but I’m also going to make a few for my pen box at work!

This is a fantastic idea! My kids have already expressed interest in “beading” their desk lamps. Thank you Ganz!

These make great gifts for kids (and some adults) ….if you buy the things needed to make it and then give it as a “kit” they can make (even putting in the letter-beads so they can “discover” their name in the bag of beads). then throw it in a pretty bag or ziploc bag tired with a ribbon. also a good vacation time filler. Also fun for a birthday party craft project. We made pens for the Grandparents when we went to the Grand Canyon and wrapped a pretty little rock against the pen to show them what they’d missed. The possibilities are endless!
